David Balfour is a 17-year-old orphan in Scotland, 1751. He goes to meet his uncle Ebenezer, who tricks him and sells him to a ship captain. David is kidnapped and sent as a slave to America. He meets Alan Breck Stewart, a Highland rebel. Together they escape, cross the wild Highlands, and face danger while David learns about loyalty and courage.
